PhD student and PostDoc Position in Neurodegenerative Diseases @ German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Heidelberg

Our recently established research group “Proteostasis in Neurodegenerative Disease” at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg is currently seeking a motivated PhD student and a PostDoc interested in mechanisms of protein misfolding and its link to neurodegenerative diseases.

About Institution : The DKFZ is a world-leading institution in the field of applied and basic biomedical research and is closely integrated into the Heidelberg research campus (www.dkfz.de/en). Translational neuroscience research plays a central role in Heidelberg and our group is part of the CellNetworks Cluster of Excellence (www.cellnetworks.uni-hd.de), giving access to state of the art facilities such as the Chemical Biology Core Facility and the Nikon Imaging Center.

Nature of Job : Our young and motivated team studies the complementary processes of protein misfolding and aggregation which underpin the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The overall goal of our work is to advance our biomedical understanding of the molecular events triggered by protein misfolding and the subsequent impact of protein aggregates on cellular integrity. The efforts of our group are focused on the molecular mechanisms of neuronal degeneration linked to the accumulation and spreading of aggregated protein species. The main focus of this work, is the detailed characterisation of protein aggregates linked to these diseases in cell culture as well as novel Drosophila models developed in our group. The successful applicants will deal with a great variety of methods, ranging from basic molecular biology and protein chemistry to cutting-edge technologies such as high-throughput RNAi screening and multiparametric fluorescence imaging.

The successful applicants should be eager and highly motivated to work efficiently in a team of young scientists and have a deep interest in protein misfolding and neurodegenerative diseases. Expertise in molecular and cell biology methodology as well as Drosophila are required. Both positions are available immediately, but the start date is negotiable.

For Query : Informal enquiries or complete applications, consisting of a brief statement of research interests, qualifications and experience, together with a curriculum vitae and a list of scientific publications, should be sent to t.jahn@dkfz.de

Deadline : 27.01.12
