The Doctoral Programmes consist of a three-year interdisciplinary graduate course curriculum combined with an experimental project leading to a dissertation. Each doctoral researcher will be supervised by two professors from different faculties and will benefit from our Doctoral Development Programme. Seminars and courses are conducted entirely in English; German language courses are offered for international students. Depending on the project selected and own qualifications students may receive a stipend and may be eligible to register for one of the doctoral degrees offered at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Dr. med., Dr. med. dent., Dr. biol. hom., Dr. med. vet., Dr. biol. anim., Dr. rer. nat., Dr. agr. and Dr. oec. troph).

Requirements include a diploma or master degree in biology or biochemistry with above average grade as well as experience and a keen interest in molecular genetics and microbiology, bacterial pathogenesis, computational biology and RNA biochemistry.

The project aims at the identification and characterization of regulatory RNAs and RNA-binding proteins involved in the posttranscriptional control of virulence gene expression and pathogenesis of the plant-pathogenic bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria.

The project is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and is part of the graduate school GRK 1591 “Posttranscriptional control of gene expression – mechanisms and role in pathogenesis” (further information at: https://www.medizin.uni-halle.de/grk1591). NCMM develops and adapts technologies for personalised medical applications and unravels new diagnostic methods and drug targets. Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international research institute in Helsinki, Finland, focusing on human genomics and personalized medicine. FIMM integrates molecular medicine research, technology center and biobanking infrastructures “under one roof” promoting translational research and personalized medicine. FIMM researchers are involved in grand challenge projects, such as the impact of genome information from the Finnish population in personalized health and medicine, development of individualized cancer medicine and novel diagnostics via cell and tissue imaging. The aim of MIMS is to strengthen Swedish research and enhance the dynamics in the field of molecular medicine, partly by promoting the career opportunities for young scientists. MIMS is established within the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR, http://www.ucmr.umu.se) that includes researchers active in the fields of molecular and clinical microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry and physics, and the research groups have a pronounced international profile. MIMS and UCMR are affiliated with both the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science and Technology and are closely connected to the university hospital (Norrlands University Hospital). An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate within the Multiple Sclerosis and Gene Therapy research groups in the Centre for Neuroinflammation and Neurodegeneration, Division of Brain Sciences, Department of Medicine at Imperial College London.

You will work on a Multiple Sclerosis Society funded project investigating the role of meningeal inflammation in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis, using novel lentiviral vectors to chronically deliver cytokines to the brain in an experimental model of MS pathology. You will work in the Wolfson Neuroscience Laboratories under the supervision of Professors Richard Reynolds and Nicholas D Mazarakis to generate and characterise novel lentiviral vectors and to study their effects in a model of MS.

You will have a PhD or equivalent in the neurosciences or immunology, and proven skills in molecular biology, immunohistochemistry and protein analysis. Previous experience with experimental models of neurological disease or lentiviral vector work will be an advantage but not essential.

This is a full-time, fixed-term post for 3 years based at the Hammersmith Hospital Campus.
