PhD Scholarship - Statistical Genetics - Investigating Missing Heritability in Health and Disease : Brisbane, Australia

The Statistical Genetics group at the University of Queensland Diamantina Institute aims to understand the genetic basis of common complex traits and diseases and develop statistical methodology to better accomplish this task. The successful Scholar will pursue a PhD degree in Statistical Genetics Approaches to Investigating Missing Heritability in Health and Disease within the Statistical Genetics Group at the UQ Diamantina Institute. The student will help develop and apply novel and existing statistical genetics approaches for detecting missing heritability in complex traits and diseases.

A PhD is about learning new skills and learning how to do research. We recognise that students will come to us from different backgrounds in order to learn these new skills. Projects are fundamentally quantitative and computer-based, so evidence of quantitative aptitude is essential. We will consider students from a wide range of backgrounds including, but not limited to: genetics, maths, statistics, epidemiology, computer science, bioinformatics, molecular biology, psychology, and physics.

The Life Science Zurich Graduate School consists of several highly competitive Ph.D. programs, run jointly by the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. Each program offers research and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree. Essential Qualification:

(d) The upper age limit of the candidate should be 28 years as of 1st July 2013. Age relaxation will be given for five years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/women/PH and three  years in case of OBC (as approved by Govt. of India) candidates.

If selected in the final interview, candidate having a national fellowship need to activate the fellowship as per the norms of the agency. PhD Studentship - Structure-function analysis of GTGs – novel membrane proteins required for growth and development : Southampton, United Kingdom

Applications are invited for a 3 year fully funded PhD studentship commencing Autumn 2013.

The project, titled “Structure-function analysis of GTGs – novel membrane proteins required for growth and development”, is a multi-disciplined approach aimed at revealing the molecular details of a GPCR-Type GTPase protein that may have anion channel activity.

Presently, we are at the beginning of an explosion of knowledge regarding integral membrane proteins due to the development of techniques and approaches that have greatly increased the output of membrane protein studies. Many of these membrane proteins are critical cellular gateways that control the physiology and development of individual cells and whole organisms. The novel family of GTGs, present in all eukaryotes, are an example of one such class of proteins. The candidate will learn all of the membrane protein 3-dimensional X-ray crystallographic techniques and apply these to the GTGs. These, in combination with molecular biological and biophysical approaches, will be used to reveal the molecular features of the target protein. However, equally as importantly, this approach will provide the candidate with a broad and valuable skills set that can be applied across any biological research interest.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a minimum of a UK Honours Degree at 2:1 level or equivalent in a relevant subject.

This studentship is fully funded; covering University tuition fees and providing a tax-free bursary of £13,590 per year, rising annually in line with the UK Government (Research Councils UK).  Please note that, due to restrictions on the funding, this studentship is for UK/EU applicants only.

National Institute of Plant Genome Research, is an Autonomous Research Institution, funded by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and conducts basic and applied research in the frontier areas of plant biology. Ph.D. Programme in Biomedical Science at the Graduate School of Medicine,

Osaka University, Japan

Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) invites applications from Indian citizen for Ph.D. programme at Osaka University, Japan for the academic year 2013. Applicants will be screened for compliance at THSTI, and then interviewed by THSTI selection committee. Details of the Interdisciplinary Program for Biomedical Sciences (IPBS) are available at the
Osaka University official website (http://www.med.osaka-u.ac.jp/index-e.html).

Eligibility Criteria:

• Candidates must hold (or expect to complete by September 30, 2013) a Master’s degree or equivalent in Life Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry,Veterinary Science or Pharmaceutical Sciences.
• Valid TOEFL (≥600) or IELTS (≥6.5) score.

Documents to be submitted to THSTI:

• Cover letter, CV, recent passport size photograph and a statement of scientific intent and ability.
• Letters of recommendation from academic only. (at least two)
• All academic transcripts/records from high school to post-graduation. (10th to Master’s)
• A copy of TOEFL or IELTS scores.Important notes for applicants:
  
• Incomplete applications will be rejected. Revision of applications once submitted is not permitted.
• Please do not submit original documents with the application. Submitted documents will not be returned.
• Initial screening for candidates will take place at THSTI. Final selection will be carried out jointly by THSTI and Osaka University at THSTI.
• Accepted students will be students of Osaka University and will receive funding from Osaka University.
